Background
Section titled “Background”- With “high stock market valuations in Sept 2026, this issue is very timely, and high impact, and one of the perennial dilemmas. Cited empirical academic research could be misleading and harmful when applying simple rule-of-thumb advice to invest now regardless of where in the market cycle.
- Rational Reminder podcast #418, an AMA episode that also addresses this issue. https://rationalreminder.ca/podcast/418
- My Market Timing folder has 80 articles, from academic papers and The Globe and Mail.

Section titled “My App Utils that might help”\\wsl$\Ubuntu-24.04\home\ta\projects\asset-history\README.md\\wsl$\Ubuntu-24.04\home\ta\.claude\skills\investment-analysis-historical\- This skill, and it’s example template does much of the similar functionality needed.
- Hypothesis
- There are times, late in the stock market cycle, that some version of market timing benefits long-term investors, over say a 10-year holding period. The simple rule of thumb that investing all now is better than dollar cost averaging or any market timing approach is not always true, and can actually be harmful at extreme market valuations.
- The Japanese stock market bubble is perhaps the strongest evidence for this hypothesis.
- Surely we can provide a more detailed insight into expected future value returns if we ALSO account for the relative position in the market cycle as indicated perhaps by the CAPE (Schiller PE) ratio or a “or better” indicator. I believe there is an established correlation between Shiller PE and future 10-year stock market returns. I believe that the financial planning industry regularly updates its forecast for reasonable 10-year future returns (to be used in financial plan/projections), based on some changing parameters like market valuations.
- My understanding is that empirical research suggests that historically 2/3 of the time it is better off to lump sum — to invest now and not attempt to time the market. That may be true but does not account for CAPE valuations (or other factors that might indicate a different stage in the market cycle). If we know that we’re in the 95th percentile of historical Shiller PE range then that is a subset of all experiences (that average out to 2/3 of the time being better off to lump sum and invest now).
- Let’s consider an analogy as Warren Buffett also loves to do to make communication more effective. Consider a sports analogy, and since I’m in Canada, I will use hockey. Suppose we have a strong team (perhaps the the latest winner of the last three cups) against a weaker team. Perhaps historically, prior to the start of the game, the stronger favorite team is expected to win the game 2/3 of the time. But even the best teams in the league sometimes lose to the worst teams in the league. Now let’s factor in additional information, only available later, during the game, and use Bayes theorem and expected value calculations. If we have the additional information that the score late in the game (going into the third period) has one team ahead by at least two goals, clearly that additional information provides a different expected value (EV) of future events.
- I have not heard this factored into any academic or expert discussion of Market timing, and whether one should lump sum (invest now) into the market regardless of market valuations.
- We continually look at base rates or median expectations with no additional information but we do have additional information where there is a strong correlation with future expected returns. let’s get this data and let’s come up with better analysis.
- Critique this assessment and hypothesis
- Research first
- Borrow > Build
- First research if this issue is already researched, to any degree. I believe that the rational reminder podcast, by Ben Felix who is a geek on these topics, suggests that there is a gap here.
- In my Market Timing folder, at least assess the abstract in the academic papers, and scan the other artifacts for relevant clues of where to look deeper.
- Do a deep research on the best empirical research on Market timing and whether it’s better to lump sum or dollar cost average into a market (when markets are high).
- Build
- Then plan and build a world-class model to analyze and test this hypothesis.
- Empirically backtest with the S&P 500 and S&P/TSX versus cash to answer the question:
- How should I invest when the markets appear to be overvalued. Are there any times in the market cycle when the 10-year Expected Future Value from equity investing now is less than holding cash?
- Be careful to differentiate between the value of the market price index and total returns. Investors should only care about the total net amount they receive (more important for Canadian investors).
- Maybe there are additional momentum or timing signals that give us stronger and clearer indication of future expected returns.
- Later, consider getting a second strong AI model to critique it as Devil’s Advocate and disprove or strengthen our confidence in its reasoning and results.
- This issue directly relates to my Market Drop Wins project, linked to my $MART DEBT Strategies library.

Section titled “Success Criteria”- Critique of my hypothesis
- Summary of deep research on this issue.
- Standalone HTML artifact analyzing the issue/hypothesis.
Decisions (Talbot, verbatim)
Section titled “Decisions (Talbot, verbatim)”- D1 (round 1): “EV = tie is superficial. A world-class investment analyst would not merely compare absolute expected valuations. They would consider the reward to risk ratio, and perhaps other metrics. … Benefiting over a 10-year time horizon with a 50% confidence level is meaningfully different than when one expects a 95% confidence level. Agreed? Go deeper.” → round 2 added report §3 “Risk, and objectives beyond maximum wealth” (
risk.py); “EV ≈ tie” withdrawn. - D2 (round 1): “Great point about the Canadian benefit of deferred capital gains. The net after tax impact from investing is truly what matters. … I like all three of your optional extensions.” → after-tax Canada (
tax.py), TSX CAPE (Siblis), ECY signal (CAPE-H not buildable). - D3 (round 1): “It is not SDC IP yet, but probably will be, after we go deeper!” → superseded by D12.
- D4 (round 1, Talbot Response): “Even when the 10-year expected value at late stages in the stock market cycle are still greater than the expected value from cash, it is probably true that the reward to risk ratio is significantly reduced, and thus warranting more conservative investors to pause before deploying more risk assets. … Often, people assume that maximizing terminal wealth is always the primary objective. It is not.”
- D5 (round 2): “I want the HTML artifact produced to MY computer, in
\\wsl$\Ubuntu-24.04\home\ta\artifacts\.” + “my web_deploy util should deploy ALL artifacts to www.talbotstevens.com/artifacts, for viewing by anyone. Subtask this” →~/artifacts/home; web-deploy-artifacts-publish filed (opt-in only). - D6 (round 2): “I want this artifact to make sense to others, for their feedback.” — concise 4-8 findings; “Details: Brief / Full” pill top and bottom; reading-time estimate; Context section with “More …” + glossary → built round 3.
- D7 (round 2): Japan mini-analysis; “The primary reason is to help reduce negative investor behavior.” → round 3 Japan section.
- D8 (round 2): Valuation + Momentum rule: “Go much deeper on this and create a mini report and perhaps even a separate HTML artifact … This could be a key part of a Market Drop Wins offering. Agreed?” → companion report
valuation-trend-rule.html. - D9 (round 3): “delete: “(Brief hides 78% of the text). Reading at 238 words/min (Brysbaert 2019), plus 20 s per chart and 4 s per table row.” OK to reference how for me, in these notes.” · “Academics reference T-bills returns. Real investors invest in high-interest savings accounts (HISA) and perhaps cashable GICs. … use the term cash more while occasionally referencing T-bills.”
- D10 (round 3): “Include a separate analysis for reducing equity exposure by 50%. Thus, 100/0 goes to 50/0 (60/40 goes to 30/70).” · “Apply “Details: Brief/Full” UI to ALL artifacts produced” · ""View: All / 20 years"" slider on all time-series charts, all artifacts → the dial table;
report/base.js;Design-Principles.md§7. - D11 (round 4): “Yes, now we’re ready” (Devil’s Advocate) · title: “New Research: Market Timing at High Market Valuations. Evidence and Behavioral Insights.” · “The question, and why it matters” >> “The Hypothesis, and why it matters” · Context moved under title.
- D12 (round 4): MDW offering spin-out “yes” · precious metals “find way to be consistent, with SSOT” · MDW fold-in “yes, now” · ownership “can now move to SDC/IP/Strategies, perhaps under group “market-timing”, since others may follow?” · retrofit Brief/Full to older dashboards “yes, thanks” → all done round 5.

- Dec 1999 model forecast −4.0%/yr real vs realized −3.2%; planner average +6.7%.
- After-tax Canada: TSX beat taxable T-bills 98% (pre-tax 83%); US stocks from Canada at top-5% US CAPE beat taxable CAD cash 35%.
- Dial (US 1926–2026): 100/0 buy-hold 10.3%/−84%; halve-on-trend-break 10.2%/−62%; all-to-cash 9.6%/−43%; 60/40 halve 8.5%/−40% vs −63%.
- Valuation + trend: 11.0% vs 10.3% CAGR, out 7% of months; edge mostly 1929–32; no protection in crashes from ordinary valuations (2008, 1973–74, 1987).
- Japan: peak 29 Dec 1989; −81% price, recovered Feb 2024; trend exit Feb 1990.
- Cash sensitivity from top-5% starts: stocks beat cash 53/47/45/37% at T-bill −1.0/−0.5/0/+0.5.

Do Not Redo
Section titled “Do Not Redo”- “EV ≈ tie today” framing — withdrawn by D1; use reward-to-risk (Sortino/Sharpe, P(beat cash)) (round 1→2).
- Research is NOT novel: Campbell & Shiller 1998/2001, Welch 2000, Pfau 2011–15, Kitces & Pfau 2015, Luskin 2017, Asness 2017, PWL/RR #418 2024, Estrada and Palazzo 2026. Frame as research-to-practice gap (round 3→4).
- Lump sum vs DCA frame hides the real question (stocks vs cash, 10 yr, Canadian TR); PWL already ran DCA at 95th pct (round 1).
- Japan peak was 29 Dec 1989, not ~1980 (round 3).
- Relative (percentile) valuation rule flags Japan “extreme” from 1959 — use absolute thresholds or valuation + trend (round 3).
- AI-sourced “CAPE 38–40 brings 40–60% correction within 1–3 yrs” failed: actual 25–33% (round 1).
- “Canada CAPE ~18” in Nov 2025 notes was an AI error; TSX CAPE 28.0 Aug 2026 (Siblis) (round 2).
- CAPE-H: no published series, needs Compustat R&D data — not used (round 2).

Claude Response — 2026-09-24 (round 5)
Section titled “Claude Response — 2026-09-24 (round 5)”Creep gate (round 5): you chose Continue. All five remaining items are done this round.
Reports (same links): main https://claude.ai/artifact/BfA8jRojdFHtLArKBj3U8w · companion https://claude.ai/artifact/4xd4oHHcwSEwCiJ6PqhrKB. Local copies are in ~/artifacts/.
Summary:
- Title and headings.
- H1 is now your wording: “New Research: Market Timing at High Market Valuations”, with the deck “Evidence and behavioural insights for investors, at a Shiller CAPE of 40.6”. The browser/gallery title is “Market Timing at High Valuations”.
- The Context section now sits directly under the title, as “The Hypothesis, and why it matters”.
- The old subtitle moved into Context → More → “What is tested”.
- I used Canadian spelling (“behavioural”) to match the rest of the report.
- Devil’s Advocate brief regenerated for both reports and on your Windows clipboard. It now has 11 findings, adding the halving dial, cash sensitivity, the Dec 1999 forecast check and Japan. File:
/home/ta/projects/cape-timing/docs/devils-advocate-brief.md·\\wsl$\Ubuntu-24.04\home\ta\projects\cape-timing\docs\devils-advocate-brief.md - MDW fold-in done, as drafts for your approval (IP runs at A1):
- New group
market-timing(MT) added to SCHEMA §8, per your suggestion. - New record valuation-trend-rule (
MT-1), statusdraft. I proposed risk-level 0 (it only ever reduces exposure). Tier assignment escalates to Risks, then you, and the name is a working label that needs your call. - pre-decline-deleveraging: the valuation evidence is added. Its open question “can a CAPE-conditioned version be defended?” is now partly answered: CAPE alone, no; CAPE plus a trend break, yes, as insurance. The rule-triggered deleveraging variant is added.
- buy-more-low: the “Canadian total-return recomputation” blocker is unblocked (a gated TSX total-return series now exists; the recomputation itself hasn’t run). The MDW §3.1 “re-test on the top valuation quintile” bound is recorded as tested.
- Record links point at cape-timing (the durable registration), not at this task file, which may be deleted at close.
strategy-lint: clean, 33 strategies; the index andlibrary-view.htmlare regenerated, andMT-1appears in both. Bug found and fixed along the way: the linter was hanging indefinitely. It looked for the vault root via aCLAUDE.mdfile that doesn’t exist, climbed to/and scanned all ofC:\. It now uses.obsidian/(about 3 s). The fix is recorded in thestrategy-lintutil doc (the util folder isn’t a git repo).
- New group
- MDW offering successor created: MDW-valuation-trend-offering (
SDC/Offerings/Tasks/,status: ready). It covers a client rule card, an advisor explainer, the compliance pre-approval list and a name shortlist. - Ownership: moved this task to
SDC/IP/Tasks/. The strategy content lives inSDC/IP/Strategies/market-timing/. Thecape-timingutil registration stays inCore/IT/Utils/Custom/(the single discovery index). - Precious-metals SSOT fixed: the file stays in the skill (the ai-config SSOT, deployed to both WSL and Windows).
~/artifacts/precious_metals_investing_dashboard.htmlis a symlink to it, so every artifact is reachable in one folder with one physical copy. - Brief/Full retrofitted onto both older dashboards (large-cap and precious metals). This uses
scripts/retrofit_ui.py, which is idempotent and injects a generated copy of the sharedbase.js. Tested with no errors. These pages are short, so Brief hides the 30-year card, other factors and methodology (Brief ≈ 1–2 min, Full ≈ 2 min). - Committed:
cape-timing(+1), ai-config (+1, deployed).
Next Steps for Talbot:

Talbot Response
Section titled “Talbot Response”- After incubating on our research and findings yesterday, the following outlines a new reframing.
- Think DEEPLY about the following and assess.
- Then provide your objective perspective, and potential impact/opportunity.
- Then we will reassess the most effective strategic plan to move forward.
- Based on the potential impact/opportunity, should this issue be explored with the strongest model, Fable 5.1?
-
Why it matters, clarified!
Section titled “Why it matters, clarified!”- This analysis was initiated to explore if the commonly held views on how to invest new available cash into an overvalued stock market could/should be improved.
- This decision impacts some investors, with relatively small amounts. Those who get bonuses annually might have perhaps tens of thousands of dollars to consider. The very rare case of an inheritance or perhaps lottery winner might involve significantly more.
- But the issue of how to deal with very high equity market valuations directly impacts of almost every equity investor (in U.S., Canada, and anyone holding overvalued U.S. equities directly or indirectly). And the amounts impacted are significantly higher than one’s annual bonus.
- Advisors and investors who are aware of the US market lost decade already know and perhaps have personally experienced the financial and emotional impact that could occur. In fact, we have verified the correlation between predicted 10-year returns based on CAPE and what actually followed.
- Thus the main story and impactful finding addresses how investors should reassess their equity allocations and the amount of risk in their portfolio when market valuations are at very high levels. The consequences over a 10-year time period are sometimes extreme.
- Financial: which can be quantified (historical and potential future scenarios)
- Emotional: which is significant
- Behavioral: For some, the negative overhang of the financial and emotional pain will result in changes in their investment approach. In short, some people get burned so much that they swear off of equity investing and/or reduce their future equity allocations. The result is they do avoid the future emotional and financial pain of loss, but also lose the future higher returns. Because fundamentally, the downside volatility is the price investors must pay to get the higher long-term returns of equities.
- xxx
- Based on the reality that very few knowledgeable financial geeks are aware of part of this refined analysis let alone the less knowledgeable investor world, and the magnitude and breadth of those affected, am I overstating the impact of this message and practical behavioral solution?
- A refinement of this analysis and a viable practical solution on how to navigate it with a more beneficial reward relative to risk solution is very valuable to all involved in overvalued markets (US in late 2026)! Agreed?
- Equity allocations can be reassessed, adjusted to a level that is more appropriate for the individual’s real objectives and risk tolerance, and perhaps a Market Drop Wins strategy or two can be prepared to additionally benefit if and when a market drops significantly.
- To sharpen the point and perhaps quantify the value, we could ask “How much would an equity investor have paid in 1999 to confidently know that the forward 10-year returns in the American stock market would be zero?”
- We can get data on the median or typical equity allocation ratio and amount, perhaps for our target market. We can then calculate the loss incurred, including the time value of money, contrasting the do-nothing approach compared to the new Market Drop Wins strategy of currently called “Valuation + Trend” rule. (Better name needed, to come later.) We could do a historical “If you had used …” analysis both for the hybrid approach of a 50% equity reduction, and the initial binary 100% equity/cash allocation.
- xxx
- This reframing should be captured in the headline and title of the research, and flagship Market Drop Wins offering. We want to highlight the impact and effectively probe at the emotional impact of realistic significant financial loss.
- Valuable subtask: brainstorm a great name to communicate this issue/threat/opportunity/benefit.
- Analysis Tool
- Then we want to build a world-class analysis tool that gives a historical quantification of the normal industry approaches heading into the US lost decade, and the Japanese stock market, and more. It will default to the median profile for our target market. It will allow very efficient personalization, where only one or two key inputs are easily adjusted, and the remainder are already established as defaults for efficiency, per the F.A.S.T. principle.
- Let’s spin out a task to plan and build this app in a way that allows different market timing strategies to be tested, back tested, and then forward tested, with Monte Carlo like simulations to provide probabilistic analysis of how various strategies perform in terms of the metrics or objectives that matter most to the individual. Again recognize that a single metric like future value is very rarely the right measure. As a minimum, probabilistic reward relative to risk is the right metric to optimize and focus on.
- And with a flexible framework to test various market timing strategies to best prepare for very high Market valuations, the next phase (LATER) is to rigorously explore various strategies and try to find “or better” ones.
- In particular, the methodology involved in Dual Momentum should be explored.
- Book by Gary Antonacci “Dual Momentum Investing: An Innovative Strategy for Higher Returns with Lower Risk”.
- A PDF version is also available via Archive.org for those interested in previewing the content. https://dn720006.ca.archive.org/0/items/red-pill-books_202302/Dual%20Momentum%20Investing_%20An%20Innovative%20Strategy%20for%20Higher%20-%20Gary%20Antonacci.pdf
- Youtube: https://youtu.be/iieXj9IZsYQ?si=-JlBby5i30CSOeAf
- Book by Gary Antonacci “Dual Momentum Investing: An Innovative Strategy for Higher Returns with Lower Risk”.
- Another story point to note, that led to me doing this analysis and reducing my equity exposure personally. Warren Buffett, one of the best known and smartest investors on the planet, had acted on his awareness of extreme market valuations by going to over 50% cash! This and other learnings prompted me to reduce my personal equity allocation, but not for the normal reasons. It directly led to me doing this refined analysis on dealing with extreme market valuations and how it impacts millions of investors and advisors, and the search for practical solutions to reduce the financial and emotional harm during these events, and turn a Market Down situation into Wins, after the market is “on sale”.
- Sorts analogy upgrades
- Let’s also position the issue simply by asking if the amount you are willing to bet changes between before the game starts and heading into the late stages where there is at least a three goal difference? Would it impact the odds that you would want in making a bet?
- Let’s change this analogy illustration to a three goal difference. Then we can joke about how this is especially hurtful for Leafs fans.
- It provides the real world lesson that even a three-goal lead with 11 minutes left to play (and a 2-goal lead with 1:30 to play!) does not guarantee a win!
- WARNING: These may cause significant pain for Leafs fans
- For the American market: research the most famous American sports collapse, ideally in the most popular sport, or perhaps a collection of the most famous in each of NFL, NBA, MLB.
Claude Response — 2026-09-25 (round 6)
Section titled “Claude Response — 2026-09-25 (round 6)”Creep gate (round 6): you chose Compact and continue. The file went from 56.7 KB to 29.2 KB (−49%); the full history is in archive/Market-timing-refined-analysis-precompact-2026-09-25.md.
My verdict on the reframing: you are not overstating the breadth, and the new numbers support the size of the stakes. Where it could overstate is certainty. The evidence supports “size the bet down”, not “the market will fall”. Build the flagship on that, and it survives the Red Team and compliance.
Summary:
- Breadth: agreed. The lump-sum question touches a few people with a bonus. The allocation question touches almost every holder of US equities, directly or through funds, and on their whole portfolio. Reframing from “lump sum vs DCA” to “how much stock should I hold at record valuations?” is the right move. It is also the question round 1 said the lump-sum frame was hiding.
- Magnitude, quantified (your “what would you have paid in 1999 to know?”). New script

| 100/0 (cash) | $96,264 (worst −50%) | $144,121 (worst −30%) | $204,652 (−13%) | $131,068 |
| 60/40 (bonds) | $132,165 (worst −28%) | $182,297 (worst −10%) | $245,580 (−7%) | $190,923 |
- Answer to your question: knowing the decade would be flat was worth about $35k per $100k (100/0: hold cash instead) or $59k (60/40: hold bonds instead), before any rule.
- Not cherry-picked to one month: across all 134 top-5% CAPE start months with a full decade (1928–30, 1961–66, 1995–2004), halving finished ahead of doing nothing in 100% of them (100/0) and 97% (60/40). The median gain was about $29k per $100k.
- The limits, which the headline must carry:
- Those 134 months are only 3 episodes.
- The expensive starts of 2017–2021 can’t be scored yet, and so far they are strongly positive.
- Recent cost: in 2017–2026 the all-out rule earned 9.7% vs 14.9% a year. The rule loses in rising markets. That is the premium on the insurance.
- The rule beating “knowing” in 1999 is its best case (it caught the 2003–07 rally). Don’t headline that.
- The core insight, sharpened: odds, not certainty. Across those same expensive starts, holding cash all decade beat doing nothing only 53% of the time. The signal tells you the odds have turned against you, not what will happen. So the rational response is a smaller bet (halve), not leaving the game. That is your behavioural point in numbers: all-or-nothing moves are what burn people, and burned people swear off equities.
- Novelty: a gap between research and practice, not a new discovery (unchanged from round 4). The research exists (Campbell & Shiller through Palazzo 2026). The opportunity is translation plus a pre-committed rule plus behavioural framing, which is SDC’s lane.
- Strategic fit is stronger than the report shows. The rule only ever reduces exposure (
MT-1, proposed level 0). That puts it at the low-risk end of your Strategic Plan risk ladder (everyone ACTs on negative risk; most consider little risk), so it can be the MDW flagship without leverage-compliance baggage. Timing matters: CAPE is 40.6 now. After a drop, the message flips to buy-more-low, and MDW covers both halves. - Buffett claim, checked at source.
- Berkshire’s stock portfolio was $297.8B at Dec 2025 (10-K) and $323.8B at Jun 2026 (10-Q), from SEC XBRL data.
- Its cash plus T-bills is reported at about $380B (press figure; the T-bill line isn’t tagged in XBRL, so this still needs checking against the 10-K text).
- So “over 50% cash” holds when you compare cash with stocks (about 55%), but cash is only about 30% of total assets ($1,222B).
- Safe public wording: “Berkshire now holds more cash than stocks.”
- Analogy: the upgrade is better, and needs recalibrating.
- “Would you bet the same amount?” is the right question, because it maps to halving.
- But a 3-goal lead late in a game wins almost every time, while stocks beat cash only about 45–55% of the time from top-5% CAPE starts. The Leafs story is best used for the other lesson: no lead is safe, and no signal is either. Expensive markets can keep rising (Japan rose another 225% after 1985). So you shrink the bet; you don’t flip it.
- Leafs facts (Game 7, 13 May 2013) check out, with exact times (NHL.com, SI):
- 4-1 with 10:42 left.
- 4-3 with 1:22 left.
- Tied with 50.2 s left.
- Bergeron won it at 6:05 of overtime.
- I can’t watch YouTube, so your second video is unchecked.
- US:
- Falcons 28-3 (Super Bowl LI, 2017; led with 8:31 left in the 3rd quarter; lost in overtime). NFL is the most popular sport, so this is the lead.
- Warriors, 73-9 in the regular season, lost a 3-1 lead in the 2016 Finals.
- Yankees lost a 3-0 lead in the 2004 ALCS.
- Source: CBS.
- Name brainstorm (the final pick goes to you, then MDW-valuation-trend-offering):
- The threat: the Lost-Decade Risk (recommended; everyone remembers 2000–09), “Record-Valuation Risk”.
- The rule (
MT-1): Lost-Decade Guardrail (recommended), “The Halving Rule” (for the mechanism), “Third-Period Rule” (hockey tie-in), “Protect the Lead” (ironic after the Leafs).- Avoid “insurance” in the name. It is a regulated term and implies a guarantee.

- (3) “No Lead Is Safe: Investing at Record Valuations”.

- Correction: the round-5 brief was not on your clipboard, as you found. Sorry about that.
- It is now written into Market-timing-Red-Team, ready to paste from Obsidian.
- It is regenerated around the reframing: headline claims A–D (allocation at record valuations, the halving rule, “if you had used it”, the practice gap), new findings 12–14, and two new stated weaknesses (censoring of recent starts, and the trend rule being in-sample).
build_brief.pywrites it there directly, as its single home; the old repo brief is archived.
- Analysis lab spun out: sdc-market-timing-lab (
SDC/IT/Tasks/,model: fable, waits on the Red Team).- It holds your spec verbatim: reward-to-risk metrics first, at most 2 inputs, Dual Momentum as the LATER phase.
- The median target-market allocation must come from a cited source; it’s a data requirement, not a guess.
- Dual Momentum: Antonacci’s own SSRN paper is already in your Market Timing folder. I’d skip the archive.org PDF: it looks like an unauthorized upload of the book, which is off-brand for client-first SDC. Buy or borrow the book instead.

## Talbot Response. * - Do you accept “odds, not certainty: shrink the bet, don’t leave the game” as the flagship’s spine (headline carries the 3-episode and recent-cost limits)?
- Agree with the spine points, for internal ref. Do not agree that this is the best labeling for external communication purposes.
- Pick a research title and rule name from the brainstorm (my picks: title 1, “Lost-Decade Guardrail”), or say “later”.
- Don’t like “Guardrail”. Address later.
-
MT-1risk-level 0: still pending (carried from round 5; you said the name comes later). OK to route level 0 to Risks now?- yes: risk-level 0 is appropriate.
- Analogy: lead with the Leafs for “no lead is safe” (size the bet) and the Falcons 28-3 for US readers?
- Per F.A.S.T., will tailor our messaging to Canadian vs U.S. audiences.
- But the key point of the sports analogy is how the additional information of knowing the score late in a game changes how betters or investors should position themselves, especially compared to before the game starts. The additional lesson is the fact that “no lead is safe”.
- Recommended plan: after the Red Team, one final round here applies its fixes plus your chosen title, “Why it matters” and the 1999 table to the main report, then close. Rule naming and flagship messaging go to MDW-valuation-trend-offering. OK? *

Talbot Response
Section titled “Talbot Response”- I never once suggested these findings lead to a prediction, especially timing. But based on history, there is high certainty that at some unknowable point in the future, the broad stock market will fall by at least 20%. The tech focused NASDAQ, with significant AI bubble concerns, might temporarily drop much more.
- Let’s apply the equity allocation and potential benefit of solution reframing to the existing artifacts. For now, use your best recommendation for the upgraded title, headings etc. I will review and provide feedback later. The reason is that I want to share these and discuss this issue with a colleague in 2 hours. And the reframing is very important.

Summary:
- “Never a prediction”: agreed, and my wording was the problem. You never claimed timing. My caution was only about how outside readers might read a headline. Your framing is now in the report: no one can predict when, but history makes a decline close to certain. The data backs it: US stocks fell 20% or more 10 times from 1926 to 2026 (month-end total return, about once a decade; the latest began Dec 2021). This is computed in
run_if_you_had.py. - Main report reframed (my best choices; review later as you said):
- Title: “What Would You Have Paid in 1999 to Know?”. The deck reads: “New research on how much to hold in stocks at record valuations, with a Shiller CAPE of 40.6 today. Evidence from 100 years of data, and behavioural insights for investors and advisors.” Browser title: “Stocks at Record Valuations”.
- Context is rewritten as “Why it matters: almost every stock investor is exposed”:
- From new money to the money already invested.
- The lost decade’s financial, emotional and behavioural costs, including investors who swear off stocks and lose the long-term returns.
- The 20%+ decline count.
- The real question: “is my stock allocation right for my real goals and tolerance for risk, at these prices?”
- Berkshire now holds more cash than stocks.
- Analogy, per your answer: the late-game score changes how much you’d bet compared with before the puck drops. Then the second lesson, “no lead is safe”, with the Leafs 2013 Game 7 facts. US tailoring (Falcons) is left for the audience-specific versions.
- The old hypothesis framing moved into Context → More, as “How this started”, with the sourced Berkshire figures.
- New lead finding: doing nothing at the 1999 peak left about a third less money than the halving rule ($96k vs $144k per $100k; 60/40: $132k vs $182k), and halving was ahead in 134 of 134 top-5% start months.
- New section, visible in Brief, “$100,000 at the 1999 peak, ten years later”: an 8-row table (do nothing / halve / all out / cash or bonds all decade, for both portfolios). Its note carries the limits: 3 episodes, the unscored 2017–21 starts, the recent lag of 9.7% vs 14.9%, and “past results are not a forecast”.
- Not used as an outside label: “odds, not certainty” (kept for internal reference, as you said) and “Guardrail”.
- Companion report: the intro now leads with allocation at record valuations and the 1999 dollar figures, which are injected from
if_you_had.jsonand not typed in. Its link to the main report uses the new title. - Tested: both pages render headlessly at 1200 px and 390 px (phone width) with 0 console errors and no horizontal scroll. I checked screenshots of the hero and the new 1999 table.

Talbot Response
Section titled “Talbot Response”- CAPE timing artifact
- “A Practical Behavioural Solution for High Markets” link at bottom: change URL to be relative to file in same folder. That will work locally and when I upload both to same folder on my site.
- Additional analysis metric: Reward/Risk over time
- FV or even EV does not capture the more important metric, recognized by professional money managers: reward/risk. It is not enough to try to optimize for future values. Investors need to be compensated for risk. Therefore it would be useful to include in our analysis how the reward relative to risk metric changes over time.
- As a simple gauge, we could plot the actual 10-year future total returns somehow related to CAPE valuations.
- What are the investment industry’s best metrics for measuring investment reward relative to risk? Specifically I would like to have a metric that accounts for long-term 10-year total returns relative to market risk, perhaps represented somehow by the Schiller CAPE.
- Historically, the inverse CAPE (CAPE Earnings Yield) acts as a strong indicator of the 10-year real (inflation-adjusted) expected return of equities.
- Excess CAPE yield (ECY): CAPE earnings yield minus the real 10-year bond yield. This is an estimate of the expected equity risk premium using the same 10-year earnings window that defines CAPE. It directly compares long-term equity “reward” to the opportunity cost / rate environment. Research Affiliates and others publish and use variants of this.
- Modified CAPE versions (total-return CAPE, CAPE adjusted for interest rates or buybacks, etc.) are also used.
- If you want a risk-adjusted return metric (Reward / Risk), look at Forward-Looking 10-Year Expected Return divided by Historic Drawdown conditional on the current CAPE decile. This penalizes the asset twice when valuations are stretched: once in the numerator (lower projected yields/returns) and once in the denominator (higher historic crash risk).
- FV or even EV does not capture the more important metric, recognized by professional money managers: reward/risk. It is not enough to try to optimize for future values. Investors need to be compensated for risk. Therefore it would be useful to include in our analysis how the reward relative to risk metric changes over time.
